In the July issue we strove to explain the meaning behind the hash tag #NuNairobi. Since we’ve acknowledged the fact that there’s an artistic revolution occurring within our city, the best thing for us to do as an audience is to let it continue to manifest itself through music, visual arts and fashion. There could be a kid making beats with his laptop right now in his room who embodies what #NuNairobi stands for, therefore we shouldn’t limit this movement to well known artists only. In fact this isn’t the time for limits at all. There’s a creative spirit that has penetrated our city and the evidence is right in front of you, if you choose to see it.
I cannot emphasize enough on the role the Internet has played in this renaissance. Artists can now effortlessly share their art through platforms such as Soundcloud and Instagram. This also allows them to directly engage with their audience and get their name out by sharing links to their work. Social media has also made it easier for artists to work together. By sending out a tweet or message they can plan meetings or send beats to each other for collaborations, a dynamic I find incredibly convenient for the current generation of creatives.
In addition, visual artists and photographers are using Instagram as a tool to showcase their work. They make each post special, and use certain aesthetics to make their pages as unique as possible. Their artsy profiles are a source of inspiration and entertainment.
Obviously there are those who still aren’t convinced that there’s a massive change in the way artists are thinking, creating and executing ideas. It’s important to note that this is just the beginning and that’s why it’s such an exciting time to be in Nairobi right now. This is a crucial time to get behind our artists and show them as much support as we possibly can. Don’t underestimate the power of a share or a retweet. I would also encourage artists to keep putting out their stuff whether it gets 1000 or 10 plays.
