The UP team is ecstatic to announce that the fresh, funktastic stylings of ALO WALA will be gracing the UP LIVE 5 stage as our headliner for the night. This combo of a Punjabi Indian rapper and a Danish production duo of Copia Doble Systema (Copyflex and Julius Sylvest), have been taking the global dance hall scene by storm. Fronted by Shivani Ahlowalia, Alo Wala’s sounds are a wild funk pop house fusion with deep beats and high energy. Alo Wala means ‘Light Vendor’ in a mix of Bengali and Hindi, and they are a fresh ray of crazy light in dark dancehalls across the world. Their sound is an effortless mix of juke, dancehall, reggae, trap, and classical Indian instruments in a mind boggling, club thumping collaboration.
Ahlowalia already has a love affair with West Africa, having followed a punk band to Guinea Bissau when she was younger she co-founded an NGO to help local youth through political turmoil. Ahlowalia is a dedicated social and political activist who, along the way, has become a bit of a West African hip hop magnet and that’s how she found her real style.
As Ahlowalia said in a recent interview: ““the difference between being able to sing, and having a voice—perspective.”
