Fresh, Young & Talented: Producer/singer Kagwe Redefining Kenyan Music

He’s got this GQ cool quotient that few 21 year olds can carry off with such confidence. In the cover art for his mixtape, “It Only Gets Better,” Kagwe Mungai wears a pork pie hat that complements his laid back look; literally, as he leans on a stair and gives the camera a slight side stare. “In my last year of High School, three little girls made cards for me saying, ‘Will you be my valentine?’ and ‘Happy Valentine’s Day.’ Those were my first fans,” Kagwe recalls.
Kagwe’s latest collaboration “Dutch” released this year, received a little over a thousand likes on You Tube in just a few days since going online and has been doing some rounds in major night clubs. “Dutch” is the latest offering by Fena which features the rapper Toshi and Kagwe who can be heard singing, “50-50 bila shame we gon’ do it dutch.” Of those who are suckers for freebies, Kagwe says at the interview, “Music should be shared, the more people listen to it the better which is why when I released my CD I did it for free.” The Southampton University Music graduate is one of the few people, who can justify the hyphens in his title, singer-songwriter-producer.
Kagwe plays the saxophone and drums, writes lyrics and produces songs. “It Only Gets Better”, is an amalgam of house music with some spoken word, rap and singing. In a Ted X video titled Don’t Be a Victim of Growing Up, the Brookhouse school alumnus says, “Failure, I have learned, is such an integral part of learning and succeeding.” Kagwe has not let the experience of a tough beginning in the industry like being booed off stage get him down. Last time he performed infront of a huge crowd at Blankets & Wine during Dwele's performance, he rocked the Mamba Village beyond many people’s expectations. And looks like, he’s not about to stop surprising us.
“ I am starting a department store, it’s called Akiki,” says the stylish singer. If there was a recipe to produce Kenya’s resident cool kid, Kagwe’s swagger, resilience, and hit songs would certainly be the necessary ingredients.
