Nairobi’s most eclectic DJ Boom a.k.a Blinky Bill (of JAB) began spinning three years ago and is the bonafide man on the live deejaying front. “I’m a producer first then a DJ, so every so often I can tell the gap where something can be added to make it more interesting,” he reveals. The DJ counts drums and the saxophone as preferred accompaniments for a live show, and credits diverse DJs such as Daft Punk and Cleo as sources of inspiration on his way up. On the most challenging skill to master, Blinky says, “Figuring out how to match beats. There’s music that works well in your head but the tempo is very different.

That, and mixing different genres.” Of his practicing patterns, he says, “I can spend three or four days practicing but when things are thick, I do stuff on the fly.” He favors Electronic and Funk music as the genres he enjoys spinning most.
