Contrary to what many may assume--and judging from the numerous conversations I have had on the subject, many do assume--androgyny is not simply a matter of swapping female clothing for male, or vice versa. Rather, it is a unique style (or dare I say "art form") that blurs the lines between femme et homme. In essence it creates a hybrid of the two that leaves one guessing. As the "androgynista" Jenny Muigai aptly puts it: "The thing about androgyny is that it blurs the line and allows one to focus on the beauty of the human form and that's rare."

Androgyny has formed the basis of the works of many international fashion designer with some of my favourite pieces "in theme" coming from Moschino's – Fall/Winter 2011/2012 collection. Kenyan designers are also joining the fold. One such example is Pat Mbela who has created an entire Grace Jones inspired collection.

Despite its absence from the mainstream Kenyan fashion scene, there are those--myself included--who embrace it as a must-have style. So, if you have a thirst for “off the beaten track” looks, androgyny opens up a whole new fashion playground where the only limit is the depths of your imagination and perhaps your confidence. Oh, and in case you were wondering what an androgynista is; that’s an androgynous fashionista.
