Curves on the Catwalk: A Kenyan Plus-Size Model

In the traditional African setting, big has always been beautiful, which has definitely not been the case at the international catwalks. Yet over the years, the global perception of plus-size models has changed due to attitude-shifts among designers, model agencies and fashion magazines of repute. The trickle-down effect has presented opportunities across the world for the willing.
One such full-figured diva is 19- year old Michelle Njeri Nganga. Unlike the standard catwalk model whose bikini measurements ought to be within the range of 36”24”36”, there is no clear consensus on the exact measurements of her full-figured counterpart. However, they tend to be between size 10 and 18. But if you ask Michelle, she simply describes her ilk as, “an extra-ordinary person who was blessed with extra-ordinary curves.” A student at USIU, modeling wasn’t part of Michelle’s plans.
By chance she participated and was selected during an audition held by modeling agency, Strut It Afrika earlier this year. “After a grueling three months of screening and photo shoots, I was finally confirmed and signed the contracts. So, technically, I have only been modeling for five months. So, [I’m] still fresh on the scene!” she enthuses. In that time she’s appeared on two runways, FAB EXPO 2012 and the recently concluded Naivasha Fashion Weekend. Both are experiences she cherishes.
Michelle explains, “You have to be careful not to mess up but apart from that they make you feel like you are the Queen of the world. Well, at least that’s how I feel.”Although there aren’t enough Kenyan designers making high-end collections for plus-size models to strut in the catwalk, Michelle still feels that it does not mean there is absolutely no demand for the full-figured muse. “The world is changing and the general public is more for curvy women than skinny and tall. Yes, some individuals seem to think plus size models cannot catwalk. Well, you need to take a look at me then,” she asserts.
