Director David Forbes and producer Jackie Lebo put in 18 months of hard work to produce this gem of a documentary. "Gun to Tape" reveals how hard the athletes train and what they have to give up to be the best. “We are not born runners, but we make ourselves runners,” says Gilbert Koech. Edna is a mother of two and the 2011 IAAF World Champion.
We follow her life as she takes us through her difficult journey, both as a woman and an athlete. Her husband Gilbert also shares how he sacrificed his career as an athlete to coach Edna and take care of their children. The other star of the documentary, 800m World Record Holder Rudisha comes across as articulate and soft-spoken. His coach, Brother Colm O’Connell, is an Irish missionary who started the first athletics training camp in the Kenyan highlands.
He talks about how he never imagined that Iten, a small village in the Great Rift Valley, would become a production line of running talent. O’Connell has trained 25 world champions and four Olympic gold medalists during his 36-year stint in Iten. There are many compelling and personal scenes in the documentary, but the competition footage is really the best part. Here, the director uses innovative camerawork and high-speed editing— combined with an engaging African soundtrack—to add to the excitement.
We predict your impression of athletics will be forever changed after seeing "Gun to Tape."
